TrueAndes presents a robust 10-day expedition that goes beyond a simple trek. We have designed this journey to ensure perfect acclimatization and cultural depth before you even step onto the Salkantay trail.

You will explore Lima and the Sacred Valley first, preparing your body and mind for the high Andes. Then, we embark on the legendary Salkantay Trek, traversing snow-capped peaks and cloud forests to reach Machu Picchu. This is a professionally supported expedition featuring our signature camping service and expert mountain guides.

Expedition Itinerary

Days 1-2: Arrival & Lima Culture

We welcome you in Lima. Enjoy a private city tour of the historic center and the Larco Museum. Fly to Cusco and settle in.

Day 3: Cusco & Sacsayhuamán

We explore the Imperial City and the massive fortress of Sacsayhuamán to understand Inca engineering before the trek.

Day 4: Sacred Valley Warm-Up

A full day visiting Pisac and Ollantaytambo. We stay overnight in the valley to aid acclimatization.

Days 5-8: The Salkantay Trek

We begin the trek at Soraypampa. Highlights include Humantay Lake, crossing the Salkantay Pass (4,630m), and descending into the lush coffee plantations of the cloud forest. We camp under the stars with full staff support.

Day 9: Machu Picchu

After hiking to Aguas Calientes, we enjoy a comprehensive guided tour of the Machu Picchu citadel. Return train to Cusco.

Day 10: Departure

Private transfer to the airport for your journey home.

Travel Information & Policies

Trekking Logistics

Equipment: We provide 4-season tents, foam mats, and a dining tent. You need to bring a sleeping bag (rated -10°C) or rent one from us.

Luggage: Mules carry up to 7kg of your personal items during the trek. We provide a duffel bag for this purpose. Store excess luggage at your Cusco hotel.

Health

Fitness: This is a challenging trek crossing a 4,630m pass. Previous hiking experience and cardiovascular preparation are highly recommended.

How cold does it get on the Salkantay Trek?

At the campsites near Salkantay Pass, temperatures often drop below freezing at night (-5°C to 0°C). You must have thermal layers and a warm sleeping bag.

Do I have to carry my own heavy backpack?

No. Our mules carry your main equipment (up to 7kg) and camping gear. You only carry a daypack with water, snacks, and a camera.

Are there showers on the trek?

Yes, but they are rustic. Cold showers are available at most campsites. Hot showers are sometimes available for a small fee paid to locals (approx. 10 soles).

What happens if I get altitude sickness during the trek?

Our guides carry oxygen and a first aid kit. In severe cases, we have an emergency horse to help you descend to a lower altitude safely.

Is water provided?

Yes, we provide boiled and cooled water daily after the first morning. Please bring refillable bottles (CamelBak or Nalgene).

Can I charge my phone/camera?

Electricity is scarce. Some campsites might have charging points for a fee, but we strongly recommend bringing a high-capacity power bank.
