What travellers say
Questions before you go
Clear answers for planning this tour.
How cold does it get on the Salkantay Trek?
At the campsites near Salkantay Pass, temperatures often drop below freezing at night (-5°C to 0°C). You must have thermal layers and a warm sleeping bag.
Do I have to carry my own heavy backpack?
No. Our mules carry your main equipment (up to 7kg) and camping gear. You only carry a daypack with water, snacks, and a camera.
Are there showers on the trek?
Yes, but they are rustic. Cold showers are available at most campsites. Hot showers are sometimes available for a small fee paid to locals (approx. 10 soles).
What happens if I get altitude sickness during the trek?
Our guides carry oxygen and a first aid kit. In severe cases, we have an emergency horse to help you descend to a lower altitude safely.
Is water provided?
Yes, we provide boiled and cooled water daily after the first morning. Please bring refillable bottles (CamelBak or Nalgene).
Can I charge my phone/camera?
Electricity is scarce. Some campsites might have charging points for a fee, but we strongly recommend bringing a high-capacity power bank.
