Last reviewed: August 19, 2026. These are planning frameworks, not fixed departures. Tickets, trains and trail permits must be confirmed for the exact date.
A good Machu Picchu itinerary is built backward from the hardest reservation: the official entrance circuit or regulated trail permit. Three days can cover the essentials at speed; five days produces a more coherent Cusco–Sacred Valley–Machu Picchu journey; seven days gives enough room for a Short Inca Trail or a slower regional experience.
Choose the right trip length
| Length | Best for | Core route | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 days | Very limited time | Cusco + train + Machu Picchu | Minimal margin and acclimatization |
| 5 days | Most first visits | Cusco + Sacred Valley + Machu Picchu | Requires prioritizing, not collecting every site |
| 7 days | Deeper context or a short trek | Cusco + Valley + trail/train + Machu Picchu | More moving parts need coordinated booking |
Three-day Machu Picchu itinerary
Day 1: arrive in Cusco and slow down
Keep the first afternoon light. Walk a small part of the historic center, hydrate and avoid a demanding excursion immediately after a sea-level flight. Cusco sits around 3,400 meters, higher than Machu Picchu.
Day 2: train to Machu Picchu
Use a coordinated early transfer and train, then match the shuttle and guided visit to the time printed on the official entrance ticket. A same-day return is possible on selected schedules, but it creates a long and tightly connected day.
Day 3: one focused Cusco visit and departure
Choose one experience that fits your flight: Qorikancha context, a guided center walk or a market visit. Do not schedule Saqsayhuaman immediately before a flight without enough transfer margin.
Use the three-day plan only when necessary. Separate train, ticket and flight bookings can make one delay affect the entire trip.
Five-day Machu Picchu itinerary
Day 1: gentle Cusco arrival
Use the same acclimatization-first approach, with a short historic-center walk.
Day 2: Cusco history and nearby Inca sites
Connect the city’s Inca foundations with Saqsayhuaman and nearby sites through a well-paced Cusco city tour.
Day 3: Sacred Valley to Ollantaytambo
Choose two or three meaningful stops rather than forcing every site into one day. An overnight near Ollantaytambo can simplify the next rail departure.
Day 4: Machu Picchu
Travel by train, visit the circuit selected in advance and stay overnight in the valley or return to Cusco according to the confirmed schedule.
Day 5: buffer and departure
A buffer is not wasted time. It protects an international connection and creates room for a final market, museum or meal if operations run as planned.
Seven-day Machu Picchu itinerary
Days 1–2: acclimatize and understand Cusco
Give the city a full day after arrival. Use our guide to things to do in Cusco to choose by interest and energy.
Day 3: Sacred Valley
Travel through selected valley sites and sleep closer to the rail or trail logistics.
Days 4–5: choose train or Short Inca Trail
A train plan can include a slower overnight in Machu Picchu Pueblo. A two-day Short Inca Trail adds a regulated hiking approach without the full Classic Inca Trail format.
Day 6: return with margin
Return to Cusco without attaching the journey to a same-evening international flight.
Day 7: departure or one final regional experience
Use the final morning according to flight time, not as an excuse to compress another distant excursion.
Alternative seven-day route for trekkers
Experienced hikers can replace the middle of the plan with a longer trek. Compare the Classic Inca Trail and Salkantay Trek by permits, archaeology, altitude, camping style and final approach. Do not treat them as interchangeable versions of the same route.

Frequently asked questions
Is three days enough for Cusco and Machu Picchu?
It is possible but compressed. A three-day plan works best with carefully aligned flights, train and entrance times and is less forgiving for travelers who need more acclimatization.
Should I visit the Sacred Valley before Machu Picchu?
Often yes. The Sacred Valley creates historical context and can place you closer to Ollantaytambo rail departures, but the best sequence depends on the confirmed train and entrance.
When should I book Machu Picchu tickets?
As soon as your travel dates and preferred circuit are firm, especially for limited routes and peak periods. Buy through the official platform or have your operator confirm the exact inclusion.
