Rainbow Mountain and Humantay Lake: Tips from a Local Cusco Guide

Rainbow Mountain and Humantay Lake are two of the most searched places near Cusco, and for good reason. One shows mountains painted in natural stripes of color; the other is a turquoise lake at the foot of a snowy peak. I have been guiding in Cusco for more than 20 years, and here is what you need to know before you go.

Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca)

Rainbow Mountain sits at about 5,000 m above sea level. The colors come from layers of minerals that were exposed over time.

  • Getting there: an early start from Cusco and about 3 hours by vehicle.
  • The hike: around 1.5 to 2 hours up, at a slow pace because of the altitude.
  • Best for: travelers who want one of the most unique landscapes in Peru.

Rainbow Mountain is included in these programs:

Humantay Lake

Humantay Lake sits at about 4,200 m, below the glacier of Humantay mountain. Its turquoise water is one of the most beautiful sights in the Andes.

  • The hike: about 1 to 1.5 hours up from Soraypampa.
  • Best for: nature lovers and photographers.

Humantay Lake is part of all our Salkantay treks, and it is also included in our Lima, Amazon, Cusco & Machu Picchu, 10 Days program.

Tips for both hikes

  • Spend at least two days in Cusco first to adjust to the altitude.
  • Bring warm layers, a rain jacket, sunscreen, and water.
  • Walk slowly and listen to your body.
