Birding Itinerary Overview
Day 1: Cusco to Cloud Forest
We depart Cusco, descending into the cloud forest. Look for the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock. Overnight at Cock of the Rock Lodge.
Day 2: Cloud Forest to Lowlands
Morning birding for quetzals and trogons. We travel by boat down the Alto Madre de Dios River to Pantiacolla Lodge.
Day 3: Parrot Clay Lick
Visit a clay lick to observe parrots and macaws. Explore forest trails for antbirds and woodcreepers.
Day 4: Deep Jungle Trek
Hike to the Petaca streams. Search for endemic species and learn about the diverse flora.
Day 5: Lake Salvador
Catamaran exploration of the oxbow lake. Spot Giant River Otters, Hoatzins, and caimans.
Day 6: Canopy Tower & Trails
Climb the observation tower for canopy species. Afternoon trail walk for understory birds.
Day 7: River Journey to Blanquillo
Boat trip to the famous Blanquillo Macaw Clay Lick. Evening night walk.
Day 8: Macaw Clay Lick Spectacle
Witness hundreds of macaws and parrots gathering at the clay lick—a photographer’s dream.
Day 9: Return to Cusco
Boat transfer to Boca Colorado and overland journey back to Cusco, arriving in the evening.

Equipment
Optics: High-quality binoculars are essential. A spotting scope is recommended for distant perches. Our guide carries a professional scope.
Clothing:
Pack quick-dry, neutral-colored clothing (greens, browns). Long sleeves and pants are best for insect protection. A rain poncho is mandatory.
Health
Vaccinations: Yellow Fever vaccination is recommended. Malaria prophylaxis is a personal choice; consult your doctor.
Physicality: Moderate walking on uneven, muddy trails. Heat and humidity can be intense.
Photography
Conditions: Lighting can be low in the understory. A fast lens and flash (used responsibly) are helpful. Humidity protection for gear is vital.
