Inca Trail Sold Out? 2 Best Alternative Treks to Machu Picchu

The Classic Inca Trail is the most famous trek in Peru, and permits are limited every day. In high season they often sell out months in advance. If you found out too late, don’t worry: there are other incredible ways to reach Machu Picchu, and many travelers end up loving them even more.

I have been guiding in Cusco for more than 20 years, and I created the Inca Jungle route myself. Here are the two alternatives I recommend most.

1. Salkantay Trek (5 days): for real trekkers

The Salkantay Trek is a true mountain adventure. You walk through high Andean passes, glaciers and cloud forest, and you sleep in comfortable domes along the way.

  • Difficulty: Days 1 and 2 are harder than the Inca Trail because of the altitude. Days 3, 4 and 5 are much easier.
  • Best for: Hikers who want stunning mountain scenery and a physical challenge.
  • Ends at: Machu Picchu.

2. Inca Jungle Trek (4 days or 3 days): adventure and fun

The Inca Jungle is a mix of adventure sports and culture, perfect if you want more than just hiking.

  • Day 1: We drive up to about 4,300 m and descend almost 3,000 m by mountain bike on a paved road to Santa María. Bikes have full suspension, you get a helmet, and a support vehicle always follows the group. We stop to learn about the local flora and fauna. In the afternoon, rafting, then a night in Santa María.
  • Day 2: A hike to Santa Teresa and a relaxing visit to the hot springs.
  • Day 3: We continue to Aguas Calientes.
  • Day 4: Guided tour of Machu Picchu.

Short on time? We also offer a 3-day version.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose Salkantay if you love hiking and dramatic mountain landscapes.
  • Choose Inca Jungle if you want variety and adventure: biking, rafting, hiking and hot springs.

Both routes end at Machu Picchu, and both make an unforgettable story to take home.
